Safety and Baby Strollers
By Ken Wilssens
Every baby product has to be thought of in terms of safety, and baby strollers are no exception. Babies are a paradox: they are delicate and small, and so susceptible to injuries in situations where an adult might not be badly hurt; yet they are not only unable to defend themselves, they frequently get themselves into trouble with the seeming ingenuity of a much older person. Baby safety is often a matter of trying to outwit your baby to think ahead to the different ways he or she might discover to get hurt.
Baby Strollers: What Can Go Wrong
Thinking about baby strollers, you can quickly see a number of potential problems: there are movable and foldable parts in which a baby can catch fingers, toes, or anything else. Meanwhile, baby strollers, which are designed to be lightweight, can tip over if you're not careful. Plus, anything that's on wheels should make you watch out for ways in which the passenger might fall out.
Keeping Baby Strollers from Tipping Over
To start with, look for baby strollers that have a wide base. Also read up on the manufacturer's recommendations about minimum and maximum weight, not only for the baby, but toys and whatever else the stroller might be laden with.
Never hang things from the handle bars of baby strollers. The weight of a shopping bag, purse or backpack suspended from a handle makes it likelier that the stroller can tip over. To avoid temptation, buy a baby stroller that has a built-in shopping basket, storage compartments, pockets, or other ways to store things safely.
With baby strollers that have a reclining seat, you should make sure your baby doesn't make the stroller lean backward when he does. Again, read carefully the manufacturer's guidelines about weight.
Making Baby Strollers Safe for Little Hands
Look for baby strollers that can lock into place once they're unfolded. That way, they won't collapse on your child's hand if he or she starts pushing at the components, or if there is simply an accident.
Keeping Babies in Baby Strollers
There should be some kind of seat belt in all baby strollers sold today. Many parents find five-point belts that pin the child down are the best. Wheel brakes should also keep your child safe.
