What's New In Nursery Design
By Jan Bay
If you are to believe the pictures of baby nurseries in photo layouts, decorating trends for baby's nurseries no longer feature storybook favorites taken from picture books. Are we to say no to cute kitties and teddy bears for our baby lambs? If big business has its way, modern themes might come closer to Swedish modern décor or the hero from a summer movie blockbuster. Professional nursery designers report that they are experiencing some unexpected trends in nursery themes and decorating, but there are ways to decorate with our beloved themes no matter what the pros are trying to sell. Just be prepared to accept some new twists on old themes and of course there are the few and the bold that choose to march to a different beat. Here's what that demographic is up to.
The parents who like to think of themselves as on the cutting edge of home fashions are not really choosing unusual themes throughout the nursery that have never been seen before, that's not the point. We can still take for granted that the individual tastes of the adults will be noted in the nursery's design. What's slightly different is the level of importance that the other living spaces in the home is being given. I'm seeing more and more that the baby's nursery is being designed to coordinate with the adjacent rooms.
The baby's nursery furnishings are extensions of the furniture used elsewhere. Many collections of high end dining and living room furniture actually feature pieces for baby's room. Think of it as adult furniture that hasn't matured.
When you walk into the baby's nursery the theme at hand no longer makes us feel as if we've entered a universe that exists solely for the use of an infant. Many of the nursery decorations that are emerging are just smaller versions of what one expects to find in the master suite.
Most of the nursery furniture collections feature pieces that give a feeling that once baby is bigger the function of the pieces might change but there's the option of continual use. The crib converts the padding might be removed from the top of the changing table to complete the transition into a dresser and the armoire still organizes clothing the same as always. Life carries on with the same furniture that you used the day that you brought your precious infant home from the hospital.
In years past there would have been the inclination to decorate the nursery in such a way from the walls out that there would have been no doubt that the room served as a baby's nursery. Recently the trend in nursery design is that if the baby crib were not in the place of honor, no one would be the wiser that a baby occupies the space.
From the wall and window treatments to the nursery furniture and floor coverings, some parents opt for a contemporary room of top shelf design with little or no variance in dˇcor from the other bedrooms. When these parents remodel the nursery, they might be guilty of removing all of the baby-ish motifs and trappings rather than installing new ones. Of course, for every parent pursuing the path of multi-age serviceable bedroom design, there's one that treasures the time they get to spend with their infant in the company of Winnie the Pooh and Beatrix Potter.
